The A4 embodies everything we love about Audi: strong performance, modern design, advanced technology, and sumptuous comfort. This latest version, all new for 2017, is a competitive entry-luxury sedan that perfectly toes the line between sportiness and luxury. The exterior is understated—some might say too much so—but it slips through the wind with nary a whisper transmitted to the interior. A potent turbocharged engine invigorates the driving experience, while a wide array of tech options adds cutting-edge sophistication.
What’s New for 2017?
The A4 is redesigned for 2017 and thus rides on a new chassis, features an updated turbocharged inline-four engine, and integrates all sorts of new features. A fuel-economy-focused version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four, known as the Ultra, joins the lineup.
Trims and Options We’d Choose
Audi offers a six-speed manual transmission on all A4 2.0T models equipped with Quattro all-wheel drive; that’s what we’d choose for its increased driver engagement (#savethemanuals). Standard features include:
• A 180-watt 10-speaker audio system with a single CD player
• 7.0-inch center infotainment display with voice control
• Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
• Bluetooth streaming audio and voice command
• Sliding/tilting sunroof
• Remote keyless entry
We’d also pony up $3800 for the mid-level Premium Plus trim, which adds a long list of welcome niceties including heated front seats, push-button start, and a 755-watt 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system with SiriusXM satellite radio. Choosing the Premium Plus trim allows you to select the Technology package ($3250), which includes the 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit display along with an 8.3-inch center infotainment display, navigation, and rear cross-traffic assist.
On the Premium trim, the better-looking 18-inch wheels yield an $800 surcharge over the standard 17-inch wheel option, so we appreciate that they come standard on the Premium Plus and Prestige. We didn’t test the 19-inch wheels that are available with a Sport package, but going to that size might compromise the car’s smooth ride quality.
Our well-equipped A4 stickers at a steep $47,400 but includes an impressive amount of tech. If you’re averse to shifting for yourself, the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is a no-cost option. Unfortunately, Audi does charge $575 for any paint color other than white or black.
